A Finnish port has made a funding application to the EU to help realise its ambition of 100% carbon-neutral operations by 2035.
The Port of Helsinki and its partners have applied for the European Union’s CEF funding for several projects in the port’s 2035 carbon neutral programme including onshore power investments, energy-efficiency projects for the terminal buildings and the automatic mooring system of berth EK7.
Project objectives include decreasing emissions in the port area, nearby residential areas and the city of Helsinki overall. The total sum of these investments is EUR18m and funding was applied for 20–30% of this.
If the port can secure funding for shore power investment, vessel engines can be turned off at berth and operations can be carried out with zero emissions and reduced noise.
The port expects to receive the EU’s funding decisions by the end of summer 2020.
Helsinki’s 2035 plan includes the target of cutting vessel emissions by 25%. Work to meet this target will encompass shore power capabilities for nine berths; making alternative fuels available at Helsinki ports; and the continued development of an environmental programme targeted at ships.
